ADVANCING MEDICAL RESEARCH

The James Dyson Foundation has made significant investments to support the advancement of medical research, as well as regular donations to medical research charities.

The Dyson Centre for Neonatal Care

A $800,000 donation to the Royal United Hospital in Bath helped fund the construction of the Dyson Centre for Neonatal Care. The neonatal unit provides care for premature and sick babies.

Opened in 2011, the centre was designed with parents, staff and babies in mind. The layout ensures staff journeys are efficient and large windows help babies gain an awareness of day and night as they develop.

A SCIENTIFICALLY-PROVEN ENVIRONMENT

Extensive research has recently highlighted the impact of the new environment for babies, parents and staff. It shows that 90% of babies recuperating in the new building are going home breast feeding, compared to 64% in the old building. And babies are better rested – sleeping on average for 22% longer.

PAVING THE WAY FOR FUTURE HEALTHCARE

The design of building will help pave the way for healthcare units of the future, both nationally and internationally. Health professionals from the US and further afield have already visited the unit and the results of this study will influence future hospital design.

"We have been hugely impressed by the outcomes of the Dyson Centre for Neonatal Care; research has shown the incredible effect that a healing environment can have on recovery."

A pioneering new cancer centre

The James Dyson Foundation has donated $5.2 million to the development of a pioneering new Cancer Centre at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, UK. The donation will support state-of-the-art medical equipment and dedicated research facilities, as well as art and pastoral gardens, when the new centre opens in 2019.

A PATIENT-LED DESIGN

Research shows that the healing environment created by a building can significantly improve patient experience, reduce stress and improve clinical outcomes. The Cancer Centre will be designed with this in mind: using natural light to give bright, spacious interiors, and removing sources of noise to create a more relaxing environment. It will also provide space for relatives and carers to stay overnight and inpatient rooms will be at the top of the building, so patients have the best views over the surrounding countryside. There will be flexible, private spaces to sit and be quiet, or to have private conversations with clinicians, or other patients.

"The James Dyson Foundation's donation will enable us to vastly improve cancer care in the region, in the same way that the Dyson Centre for Neonatal care has already done for premature babies."

Donations

$35,000 donated to medical research

Every year, we donate over $35,000 in Dyson machines and grants to medical research organizations and fundraising raffles. We estimate these donations have helped to raise over $130,000 for medical research charities.

Fundraising

$20,000 raised for pediatric research

Each year, Dyson people nominate a charity of the year. Throughout the year, employees organize raffles and in- and out-of-office events to raise money for our nominated charity. The James Dyson Foundation match-funds all money raised. Over the last three years, we raised a total of $20,000 for the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital Foundation.
