The DC22 vacuum cleaner took 2 years and a team of 25 engineers to develop.
You can find out how the machine made it from paper to plastic here.
You can also download our new hands-on product analysis and reverse engineering resources which work alongside the Education box. Both are available completely free of charge.
1. The Brief
A design brief explains the challenge that must be answered by a product and the parameters in which a design engineer must work. To start with, it can be very broad, eg. a product might need to be a certain size or perform a particular function.
Space is an issue in many modern homes with very little room for storage, so the brief for the DC22 team was to make a new vacuum cleaner that was very compact. But the engineers didn't want to compromise on its ability to pick up dust. In fact, they wanted to make it as efficient as possible when it came to filtering out dirt from the air.
